Touching with the eyes esplora, attraverso una mostra, le modalità con cui una selezione di riviste contemporanee affronta il design dell’identità e le questioni di genere.
Progettata come un insieme di interventi autonomi – immagini fotografiche, opere su carta, documenti video e audio – la mostra tesse collaborazioni con pubblicazioni internazionali fondate nel nuovo millennio e con The Feminist Library, biblioteca istituita nel 1975, per raccogliere testi e materiali della cultura femminista, diffondendoli attraverso attività di ricerca, lecture e laboratori.
Numerose peculiarità accomunano le riviste selezionate: l’indipendenza, la specializzazione in nicchie di pubblico, di genere e di argomento, l’alto grado di sperimentazione e ricerca, la tiratura limitata, la periodicità lenta (escono una o due volte l’anno, in alcuni casi sono aperiodiche), l’attenzione a mondi nascosti. Tutte sono intese dai propri fondatori come manifesti dell’individualità, il frutto di un’urgenza espressiva, eppure sono abili nel costruire delle comunità, stabilendo una relazione empatica con i propri lettori. Il titolo della mostra è teso a illuminare le potenzialità materiali e immateriali di queste pubblicazioni: da un lato sottolinea la loro importanza in quanto oggetti, dispositivi materiali con una capacità di presenza, dall’altro, accorpando i due sensi – il tatto e la vista – ci conduce a riflettere sulle loro potenzialità evocative, sulla loro abilità nel costruire immaginari.
Touching with the eyes tiene insieme interventi di Another Gaze: A Feminist Film Journal, film journal focalizzato sul lavoro di cineaste spesso poco conosciute; AZEEMA, rivista annuale che indaga la cultura femminile oggi in Medio Oriente, Nord Africa e Asia del Sud; Frute, pubblicazione attenta ai temi del femminismo intersezionale, dei confini sessuali e dell’accettazione; Hotdog, magazine letterario centrato sulla poesia contemporanea che include voci femminili, genderqueer e transgender; NEWSPAPER, revival del periodico omonimo fondato nel 1969 e teso a dispiegare, attraverso un approccio squisitamente visivo, una sensibilità queer. I contributi delle riviste sono affiancati da una produzione video concepita in collaborazione con The Feminist Library in cui materiali d’archivio sono svelati al lettore e dalla partecipazione di Gio Black Peter Art, artista visivo e performer che fronteggia i temi della violenza, del conformismo e dell’autoconsapevolezza, incontrato tra le pagine del semestrale d’arte ed erotismo Kink.

Touching with the eyes explores, through an exhibition, how a selection of contemporary magazines deals with identity and gender issues.
Designed as a collection of autonomous interventions - photographic images, works on paper, video and audio documents - the exhibition is the result of different collaborations with international publications founded in the new millennium and The Feminist Library, established in 1975 in London, to collect texts and materials of feminist culture, disseminating them through research activities, lectures and workshops.
The selected magazines have many peculiarities in common: independence, specialization in niches, gender and subject, high degree of experimentation and research, limited circulation, slow periodicity (they come out once or twice a year, in some cases they are aperiodic), attention to hidden worlds. All of them are conceived by their founders as manifestos of individuality, the result of an expressive urgency, as well as they are able to build communities, establishing an empathetic relationship with their readers. The title of the exhibition is intended to illuminate the material and immaterial potential of these publications: on the one hand, it underlines their importance as objects, material devices with a capacity for presence; on the other, by bringing together the two senses - touch and sight - it leads us to reflect on their evocative potential, on their ability to construct imaginaries.
Touching with the Eyes brings together interventions by Another Gaze, a film journal focused on the work of often little-known women filmmakers; AZEEMA, an annual magazine that investigates women's culture today in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia; Frute, a publication that pays attention to the themes of intersectional feminism, sexual boundaries and acceptance; Hotdog, a literary magazine focused on contemporary poetry that includes female voices, genderqueer and transgender; NEWSPAPER, a revival of the homonymous periodical founded in 1969 and aimed at deploying, through an exquisitely visual approach, a queer sensibility. The contributions of the magazines are accompanied by a video production conceived in collaboration with The Feminist Library in which archival materials are revealed to the reader and by the participation of Gio Black Peter, visual artist and performer who deals with the themes of violence, conformism and self-awareness, met in the pages of the semester of art and eroticism Kink.
